| | | Island School
Redevelopment |
Dear Parents, Island School
Redevelopment As many of
you will know Island School was opened in 1967 in the buildings across
the road from where we are now, and the present building was
constructed in the early 70s. There are lovely pictures in the book
“No Ordinary School” of the students of the day carrying the
furniture across the road to the newly completed blocks 3 and 4. The
other buildings of our current site were added during the next few
years, and the number of students increased until it reached the 1200
that has been the stable number for many years now. Our current school buildings have been very
much part of creating the unique atmosphere of the school, and
everyone who has spent time here remembers the playgrounds when they
are crowded with students supporting teams in a house competition and
feel more like an amphitheatre than a school. However there are
significant problems associated with the site we now occupy. We are
overcrowded both within many of the classrooms, but also with the
number of classrooms. Teaching styles are restricted by these
constraints and modern schools really need more flexible spaces. Of
just as much concern is the state and condition of the structures.
They are safe and solid and under constant observation, but the
technical reports indicate that the maintenance costs of the buildings
will increase steadily over the coming years. The ESF board has thrown their support behind
the project and we have now engaged the architects firm of Ronald Lu
and partners to do the feasibility study for a new school and prepare
the brief for the design stage which will start next year. In order to
make sure the new plans reflect the ethos, educational needs and
aspirations of the Island School community, we have appointed Gareth
Stevens and Matthew Smith to act as a liaison team between the school,
the architects and the ESF development office. They will have their
timetable and duties reduced significantly in the new year in order to
make sure the process goes well. Of course the big question is where the new school will be. At
the moment we are not completely sure of the government’s thinking
on this project and there are two distinct possibilities, both with
their positive and negative points. We may be given a piece of land on
Hong Kong Island where we can build a school unimpeded, and move into
completed buildings once they are finished. The advantage will be lack
of disruption, but we will have to give up our present location. The
alternative would be to rebuild a new school on the present site. This
retains our location, but will require moving off the site for some
time as it is built. Until the government gives us a direction as to
what is possible, we need to look at both possibilities equally. The
architects have been instructed to do this, and to look at the
problems and opportunities for both projects. Part of Gareth and Matthew’s role in this
is to ensure we have as much communication with the whole community as
possible. We need to hear views and opinion to help us solve the
problems, and to allow us to get the full story about that wonderful
but intangible Island School spirit. We need to be able to make sure
the new buildings will retain the spirit along with giving new
opportunities The first
step will be an open evening for parents early next term. Watch out
for announcements once we have fixed the date. I would like to wish you a wonderful holiday,
and season’s greetings to all. Chris Binge – Principal | |
 | | FLEMING News |
So far this has been an excellent term for
Fleming House. As always we have had students involved in many House
and school events. We have also had some individual achievements to
report. We raised HK$29,000 during Fleming charity week for our chosen
charity, Katja House in Kathmandu. During CAS Fleming students joined
others to visit the orphanage, spending the money on clothes, 2
toasters, perfume, deodorant and a bright red Fleming rubbish
bin.
This term has seen Fleming come 1st overall in the Interhouse
swimming competition and joint 2nd in the cross country event.
Most of Fleming students competed in these events and showed
impressive commitment and enthusiasm. Well done
everyone!
In year 7 we have seen Nicole Fong gain the first bronze award
in the school and Adrian Chui came 5th runner up in the 2011 Hong Kong
Junior Chess Competition. In year 12 Audrey Chaytor and Dickson Wong
were part of the Sedan Chair team who raced in
October.
This term we have seen Annie Lye and Leah Metoudi both 12F
selected as co-editors of this year’s Islander, I’m sure that they
will do a fantastic job. Annie also achieved great success in a
photography competition that was organized by the HKU Museum Society
to commemorate the university’s centenary. Four of Annie’s
photographs were selected for the exhibition, well Done
Annie!
Daniel Lo and Jonathan Leung both of 13F
organized this year’s Rainbow Trek which is a very demanding
job but both really stepped up to the plate and did an outstanding
job, well done guys!
In the Rainbow Trek Dickson Wong 12F came first in the
individual student event and completed the 50km trek in 7 hours and
15. Mr. Chillingworth was the first member of staff to
finish. Nigvi Tam 12F
achieved the Team Project Award for Engineering and Environment from
HKUST Summer Institute Award Presentation Ceremony. Well done
Nigvi! I would also like
to thank the House prefects in 13F for an excellent job last year and
would also like to welcome our new 12F prefects: Senior Sports
Prefects Audrey Chaytor and Dickson Wong, Senior Communication
prefects Nigvi Tam and Michelle Kung, Senior Charity prefects Sian
Robinson and Sara Kelly and general House prefects Tiffany Lau, Zoe
Lau, Tom Kim, Judy Tam, Tina Chin, Leah Metoudi, Annie Lye, Sanneke
Ros, Sakshi Bhatia, Suraj Mahbubani and Timothy
Lim. Well done to everyone
in Fleming House for an excellent first term and here's to an amazing
2011!

 | | Chinese
Website |
Welcome to Island School’s Chinese Website.
This website is made for each and everyone of us in the Island School
Community to share our achievements in the Chinese language
field. The purpose of
making this website is to create an alternative environment for Island
School students to learn Chinese in a more engaging and interesting
way. Instead of having lectures in classroom only, here in Island
School we use an interactive way to help students to learn
efficiently, which is to introduce another online platform for them to
access anytime, anywhere. Throughout this school year, we have three main themes, which
are CAS week, Chinese New Year and Chinese food. The current one is
CAS week and essays about it are currently being uploaded onto the
website. Moreover, there is an ‘Excellent creative writing
section’ to display the outstanding essays written by our students
to encourage creativity. On the other hand, a ‘Reading Section’ is coming up soon
which provides students with a large variety of Chinese literature
such as fiction books, articles and reading materials selected by
Chinese teachers to our students. In our Chinese Website Team, we have three groups, namely
Translation, Chinese Website and Tuition, which consist of around
twenty members from Year 9 to 12. We are responsible for different
parts of it, for example, in the translation team; we help the school
office to do some translation work each week such as the newsletter
and school website. We also made a video about the school and
translated most of the content on the school website into Chinese last
school year. Furthermore, for the Chinese tuition part, we have some
volunteers from Year 12 to tutor Year 7-9 students that may have
difficulties on learning Chinese. We try to use an approach that is
easier for them to learn on a one-to-one basis either during lunchtime
or afterschool. As students, we understand the difficulties that one
may encounter when they are learning and we are here to break through
these obstacles with them in order to enhance our Chinese level as a
whole. Last but not least,
we would like to express our utmost gratitude to our teacher advisors
Mr. Stevens and Ms Cheng for their continuous support and guidance.
Without them, this website can never be launched. Please follow the link to the Chinese
website...here Chinese website

 | | Bronze AYP First
Expedition |
A near record number of year 10 students set
out on their first AYP Bronze expedition of the year last weekend. As
we had too many students to fit into Lantau's hostels, we decided to
camp at Pui O beach, which was a new experience for us, but proved a
lovely location and the weather conditions were kind, so we had a
comfortable night's sleep. In the morning Aakarsh woke everyone bright and early so that
after a brisk breakfast, all the tents were down and we were all ready
to set off on our journey around (or in some cases across) the Chi Ma
Wan Peninsula. The students had all planned their own slightly
different routes and the aim of this first venture is to practise the
navigational skills that we have been learning in the classroom
sessions. Sure enough, it wasn't long before the first group had
'missed' their path and came running back looking for it in the
bushes. The walking was
easy under overcast skies and the groups made good progress. I was
really impressed by the efforts made by the students to learn how to
use their map and compass. My group (and Mr Irwin's) had planned to
take the now infamous 'river' route. They managed to find the path
down relatively quickly and after walking through someone's kitchen,
we descended into the ravine. This proved an interesting route and one
that I am sure we will remember for a while to come, especially as Mr
Irwin has it all on video. The next expedition is early January when the weather may be
less kind but I think the students should be well
prepared. Paul

 | | Island Debate Team goes
International |
The Hong Kong round of the World Individual
Debating and Public Speaking Championships was held at La Salle School
on Saturday 26th November 2011. Bianca Lee (11W) and Brian Wong (10W)
represented Island School competing against students selected from
other schools across Hong Kong. Students compete in 4 categories:
Debating, impromptu speaking, persuasive speaking and interpretative
reading. Mr Evershed
(Chair of HK Schools Debating Council) comments: "Every student
presented their speeches and readings with poise and polish. The
standard was extremely high, and every single contestant can feel
proud of their work, no matter what the ranking. It must be remembered
that to even compete on the day is already a significant achievement,
and the experience will stand the students in good stead as they
develop their public speaking skills going
forward." It was Bianca's
debut in this competition, she did very well, scoring particularly
highly in the Impromptu Speaking round. It was also Brian's debut in
the competition, and he went onto win the whole competition. He won by
a very big margin over many other older and more experienced debaters.
He is now on the National Debate Team, and will be representing Hong
Kong at the World Debate Championships to be held in Brisbane during
Easter 2012. This is a
significant achievement for Brian, and a well deserved achievement. He
is a very talented debater, often described as energetic, articulate
and humorous. Well done to both Bianca and Brian for working so
hard, and representing Island School so well! Daniel Trump - Post 16 Curriculum & IB

Ordinary
Matthew
Gareth Stevens和Matthew
Smith
Chris Binge –

Bronze
我和(and
Mr
Irwin。

The Hong Kong round of the World Individual
Debating and Public Speaking Championships
Bianca
Lee(11W)和Brian
Wong(10W)
Debating, impromptu speaking, persuasive speaking
和 interpretative reading。 Mr
