Home & School Working Together to Support Students

It is clear that when parents, students and school all work together young people are more likely to be successful. To help us all to have a better understanding of each others perspective Island School uses a range of systems, and events, including PTA coffee mornings, our assessment recording & reporting system, and this newsletter.

To further improve home-school understanding we will be holding two parent & student workshop sessions each term. These sessions will be concerned with the wider issues in our school community today. The sessions this term are:

1) Drug Use: patterns and treatments in Hong Kong. 3rd November 5.30pm
This session will be run by Mr Binge and Dr Mark Gandolfi (Head of St John’s Counselling).

2) Stress & exam workload – how to manage it to optimize exam performance. 22nd November 5.30pm
This session will be run by Ana Cruz (Head of Psychology at Island School) and Daniel Trump.

In the following terms we will have sessions on internet safety, possible development of the curriculum for 11 to 16 year olds, homework, and school building redevelopment.

The aim of these sessions is twofold. Firstly, to open up communication on wider issues which are affecting some of the young people in our community. Secondly, to give practical advice on how to start to find a way through some of these issues.

We very much hope that parents and students will come along and take part in practical and interactive sessions.

Scottish Opera Project

The Carmen Project - An ESF and Scottish Opera collaboration

19th – 23rd September 2011

Over 20 students from Island School were privaileged to be selected to work with professional singers, composers, directors and stage managers on a very individual interpretation of Bizets ‘Carmen’.Chorus members worked with professional singers Paul Keohone and Gloria Ellis on many challenging chorus numbers including the ‘Toreador Song’, “Chanson Boheme’ and the famous ‘Habenara’. The quality of the singing was outstanding, particularly in the numbers they were performing with Paul, and Gloria who also played the parts of the Toreador and Carmen.

The orchestra members tackled the challenging score of Bizet’s ‘Carmen’ with accuracy, musicality and impressive technical ability. The also played a composition which was created by students during the weeks. The composition group had a fantastic experience working with professional composer Karen MacIver.

The week culminated in two performances at the Drama Theatre in the Acadamy of Performing Arts.

“It was amazing to have the experience of performing in a professional venue, and to have the opportunity to see how a real opera pieces together.”

“ I will never forget the fantastic week I had, making new friends, and working with students from other E.S.F. schools, and working with real professional performers, directors and stage managers”.

“Thank you to all the teachers and members of Scottish Opera who made this week possible. Please can we do it all again next year?”
Quotes from year 10 students, Island School.

The Music teachers across E.S.F. are hoping to bring back Paul, Gloria and Karen, to put on some masterclasses for singers and composers across E.S.F. – watch this space.

Rainbow Trek

This weekend, Island School’s year 12 students will be taking part in the second practice walk for the Rainbow Trek, which will take place on Saturday 19th November, to get a feel for the second 25km of the Hong Kong Trail. Attendance of the first practice walk was great, and all groups, bar one – who got lost about 7km in at Pokfulam village – successfully completed the 25km. A special mention to Dickson Wong (12F) who finished the 25km in a time of 3 hours and 6 minutes, narrowly losing to Mr. Scott by only a minute – well done! Plenty of photos were taken throughout the day and can be found at. Students who were unable to attend the first practice walk should definitely put full effort into attending the second one, as it is essential that they have attended at least one practice, regardless of whether their group is trekking 25km or 50km on November 19th.

The Rainbow Trek is one of the school’s annual charity events that encourages sixth form students to walk the entire 50km of the Hong Kong Trail, fully sponsored, to raise money for The Rainbow Project website...here The Rainbow Project is a Hong Kong-based non-profit organisation that was started in 1999 by parents and child care professionals to provide autistic children in Hong Kong with the care, attention and educational facilities that they would not otherwise have access to at a mainstream primary school, as well as raise awareness of autism in Hong Kong. It relies entirely on private donations, of which a large amount is from Island School as, unfortunately, they are not large enough to be supported by the government. Every year, we appeal to Island School sixth form students and parents to raise money for this cause; during the last six years over which the trek has been running, we have raised over HKD 2 million, with one exceptional year of sixth form students raising HKD 800,000. Absolutely any money that you can donate to this great cause will have a life-changing effect on the children. We are also seeking corporate sponsorships from companies that have money or anything else that they are willing to spare – we can always sell donated items and send the money made to the Project. The company will be guaranteed widespread publicity in a charitable cause; their logo will be advertised on our trek t-shirts, posters and charity banner, as well as in public media, if they are able to get in touch with us on time. With this money, the Rainbow Project will have the capacity to expand and hopefully gain support from the government. Any donations at all will be much appreciated.

We ask that, if possible, you spread the word to your company or friends who may be working at companies that are able to donate. If so, please contact myself (teena.alimchandani@online.island.edu.hk) or Mr. Pak Chan, the teacher in charge (phc@mail.island.edu.hk). Individual donations can be paid by cash or cheque, with cheques made out to “Island School Amalgamated Charities”. Any further questions can be directed to either of the email addresses given above.

本會議將由Mr Binge和Dr Mark Gandolfi(聖約翰輔導主任)主持。

Scott。

請聯繫本人(teena.alimchandani@ online.island.edu.hk)或Mr. Pak Chan老師(phc@mail.island.edu.hk)。
