Island School Newsletter - 21th January 2012

I would like to thank all students, parents and staff who took time to complete the IB 5 Year Review Survey. The data that we received will help us to further develop the programme over the next couple of years. It is clear from that data that most students, parents and staff are satisfied with most aspects of the IB programme, which does not mean that there is not room for further improvement.

It is clear from the survey returns that the main areas of concern are the assessment schedule, and understanding of the core (Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essay and CAS). We will start work on both of these areas immediately. I have uploaded The Island School IB Assessment Guide to The Gateway (it can be found under the Documents Tab in the subdirectory Teaching & Learning). I will also hold an evening meeting for students and parents on The Assessment Schedule, this will be at 5.30pm on Tuesday 13th March 2012.

The key headlines for assessment for IB Diploma students in the coming months are:

Year 12.
7th-11th May IB Lang & Lit Orals
14th – 18th May Study Leave
21st-25th May Mock Exams
6th – 8th June G4 Project
19-20th June ToK Presentations

Year 13.
20th April Last day of school, Study leave begins .
2nd – 22nd May IB Diploma Exams

Advanced Diploma students in both Years 12 and 13 have just had the mid-course verification of their work (this is when Edexcel Assessors check that the work is meeting the required standards). I am happy to say that all BTEC courses  were given very high ratings by the assessors. The final deadline date for all Year 13 BTEC courses is 31st May.

The achievements of the 2011 Graduate Class in both IB and Advanced Diploma are immense. The IB student achieved an average score of 35.1, and 99.2% of the students were awarded the Diploma. Advanced Diploma students achieved 55% Distinction and 29% Merit in across all subjects. There were many very hardworking students in that year group, and we hope that the current Year 13 follow their good example. Best of luck to all those sitting examinations in the coming months.

WANBO is the Environment group for Island School, lead by a council of Year 12 students. Here is a notice about student action coming soon.

From the 3rd February to the 10th February there will be a Green Week organized by the Wanbo team , to raise money to fund the Entrak System. The Entrak system is a computer software product which will monitor our energy use and make it easier to see where we are wasting our resources. See the web-site …here for more information

In September Nansen house held its annual sponsored biathlon in memory of Amy Coxall and Gui Vezzaro. We had a great day raising a total of $48,000 with 12N winning the prize of a pizza for the most money raised (15,253). The results were as follows:

Christmas Delivery

In December 12N organised our annual Christmas delivery with students writing messages and sending flowers, chocolates etc to their friends. We raised a total of $6,300 for the Nansen charity fund. A big thank you to the 12N elves , Ms Walsh, Mr Stamp, Ms Peters and Ryosuke for their time.

我想感謝所有參與了ＩＢ五年回顧問卷的學生，家長及職員。我們收到的資料會幫助我們在未來幾年，繼續發展這個項目。資料明顯的指出大部分的學生，家長及職員都對ＩＢ最主要的範疇感到滿意。可這並不代表現存的機制沒有改善空間。

從問卷的回應看來，主要值得商榷之處乃是考試的時間表及對核心（知識論，論文及創意－行動－服務）的了解。我們會立即開始改善這些範疇。我已經上載了港島中學ＩＢ評核標準到Ｇａｔｅｗａｙ（可以在Ｄｏｃｕｍｅｎｔｓ的頭目，Ｔｅａｃｈｉｎｇ& Ｌｅａｒｎｉｎｇ的次頭目下找到）。我亦會在５：３０ｐｍ，三月十五號，星期二，舉行一個特為學??生及家長而設的晚上資料講解會。

在未來幾個月，ＩＢ學生最重要的評核標題如下：
十二年級。
五月七至十一號ＩＢ語文及文學口試
五月十四至十八號修習假期
五月 二十一至二十五號模擬考試
六月六至八號Ｇ４ 項目
六月十九至二十號知識論簡報

十三年級
四月二十號 學年最後一日。修習假期開始
五月二至二十二號ＩＢ考試

十二與十三年級高級文憑學生剛經歷了學期中段的考評－Ｅｄｅｘｃｅｌ的評核官會在這時候檢查他們的工作符合要求）。我非常滿意評核官對ＢＴＥＣ課程極高的評價。 ＢＴＥＣ最後的期限是五月三十一號。

２０１１從ＩＢ及高級文憑畢業的學生，成績斐然。 ＩＢ的平均分達到３５．１，學生當中９９．２％都能順利拿到文憑。高級文憑的學生，５５％達到了“優異”的標準，２９％達到了“良好”的標準。這群學生中不乏非常勤奮，努力的學生，而我們都希望現在的十三年級學生能夠跟他們學習。
