Just
looking around school at lunchtimes and after school, there already
seems to be lots going on. I adjudicated in the first round of
the senior debate this week and have been to the pool to see
years 7 to 9 keenly competing in their swim heats. The year 7 to
9 boys have already been playing soccer games in the ISSF
league. There are basketball and volleyball trials and students
have been signing up for other teams as well. Early morning
running and swim training have been going for some time.
It is brilliant to see the students so involved so early and we
would like to encourage all students to find an activity that
interests them whether it is a sport, creative pursuit or a
service to others. Whilst some students do not take part in any
activities, others sign up madly for everything. It is important
that students take a balanced approach and consider their
commitments carefully, which is a message I have given the year
10 students who have just signed up for HKAYP.
To get an idea of the
activities on offer, you or your child can log in to the gateway
and click on activities→ activities. It will filter the
activities by the age of the student, so you should only see the
ones that are relevant to your child. Whilst you can sign your
child up for an activity, it might be best if you discuss it
with them first and let them sign themselves up. You just click on
the link next to the activity.

We
charge an activity fee which covers the cost of equipment, buses and
pitches not just for after school activities but also for
inter-house events and some fieldtrips. It is $500 this year and you
will not be able to sign up if this has not been given into the
office along with the general indemnity form. This was sent out
with the parent handbook over the summer. Some activities carry an
additional fee which is to cover the cost of specialist coaches.

Talking
of the swim heats, the finals are coming up shortly. You are most
welcome to attend the finals which will be held at Victoria Park
swimming pool on Thursday 29th September 8.30am-1pm. Mr Bailey
will provide more details nearer the time. To keep abreast
of all these type of events you can check the school diary or
the calendars on the website, isle or gateway. We try to provide
reports and updates of sporting and interhouse events on the
extracurricular blog on the school website...here. It also
shows which house is in the lead in the interhouse shield which
was won by Einstein last year. Did you know that
Wilberforce lead at the moment?
When we take students out on school
trips it is important that we have up to date information on
them. In particular their medical conditions and needs based
around them. Whilst we will be issuing medical forms for
some trips during CAS week, at other times you can update our
records for us by logging onto the gateway. If you move or your
son or daughter has a change in a medical condition, you can
inform us by writing the new information through a change
request.

You
will get an email confirmation once we have verified the data.
And talking of CAS Week, Year 7 parents are invited to
an evening next week where I will be explaining all about year 7
Camp. If you would like to attend it is Wednesday 14th September
7pm in the lower drama studio. It follows the year 8 laptop
presentation which is at 6pm in the hall.
