Message from the Vice Principal

Just looking around school at lunchtimes and after school, there already seems to be lots going on. I adjudicated in the first round of the senior debate this week and have been to the pool to see years 7 to 9 keenly competing in their swim heats. The year 7 to 9 boys have already been playing soccer games in the ISSF league. There are basketball and volleyball trials and students have been signing up for other teams as well. Early morning running and swim training have been going for some time.  It is brilliant to see the students so involved so early and we would like to encourage all students to find an activity that interests them whether it is a sport, creative pursuit or a service to others. Whilst some students do not take part in any activities, others sign up madly for everything. It is important that students take a balanced approach and consider their commitments carefully, which is a message I have given the year 10 students who have just signed up for HKAYP.

To get an idea of the activities on offer, you or your child can log in to the gateway and click on activities→ activities. It will filter the activities by the age of the student, so you should only see the ones that are relevant to your child. Whilst you can sign your child up for an activity, it might be best if you discuss it with them first and let them sign themselves up. You just click on the link next to the activity.

We charge an activity fee which covers the cost of equipment, buses and pitches not just for after school activities but also for inter-house events and some fieldtrips. It is $500 this year and you will not be able to sign up if this has not been given into the office along with the general indemnity form. This was sent out with the parent handbook over the summer. Some activities carry an additional fee which is to cover the cost of specialist coaches.

Talking of the swim heats, the finals are coming up shortly. You are most welcome to attend the finals which will be held at Victoria Park swimming pool on Thursday 29th September 8.30am-1pm. Mr Bailey will provide more details nearer the time.  To keep abreast of all these type of events you can check the school diary or the calendars on the website, isle or gateway. We try to provide reports and updates of sporting and interhouse events on the extracurricular blog on the school website...here. It also shows which house is in the lead in the interhouse shield which was won by Einstein last year.  Did you know that Wilberforce lead at the moment?

When we take students out on school trips it is important that we have up to date information on them. In particular their medical conditions and needs based around them.  Whilst we will be issuing medical forms for some trips during CAS week, at other times you can update our records for us by logging onto the gateway. If you move or your son or daughter has a change in a medical condition, you can inform us by writing the new information through a change request.

You will get an email confirmation once we have verified the data.
And talking of CAS Week, Year 7 parents are invited to an evening next week where I will be explaining all about year 7 Camp. If you would like to attend it is Wednesday 14th September 7pm in the lower drama studio. It follows the year 8 laptop presentation which is at 6pm in the hall.

Kids4Kids

Last year 3 year 12 students, Charles Yau, Ted Clifford and Kimmy Piedmont got together to form the Island School branch of Kids 4 Kids, a completely student led charity focused on helping other young people around the world, with the mission ‘For kids, by kids’. We participated in Books For a Cause, a massive effort to collect and donate educational and junior books to students and schools in need around Asia, but particularly in disadvantaged parts of Hong Kong and China where students lack appropriate reading and reference material.

Island School alone collected and shipped over 500 books to Kids 4 Kids. As a group we just wanted to thank everyone who contributed by donating books, in particular the Island School English department for their generous donations, and everyone who showed up to help us pack them. We’re all looking forward to participating in the event again next year and furthering Island School’s involvement with this great cause.

New Year 9 Digital Media Course

Due to the changes in the school day Year 9 students now have the opportunity to extend their understanding of digital technologies through a new course set up for them.  The are several aims for the course:

To increase students awareness and understanding of digital technology and how it impacts on them
To create space in the curriculum where students could work on digital outcomes form other curriculum areas with specialist support, and to go beyond simply evaluating them by actually implementing actions for improvement
To develop students self study skills through a customized learning program

As such, the ICT department have written a number of self study course available through ISLE that students will work through over the course of the year.  There are two mandatory courses:

1.       Building my Learning Network – Blogging, RSS feeds, i-google and Social Bookmarking
2.       Personal Security and Privacy – Facebook Privacy Settings, Your Computer Security, Public Wifi, and Internet Crime

Additionally, student can select 1 out of 3 other self study course to build their own learning program.

3.       Communication Technologies
4.       Representing Reality – TV News
5.       Representing Reality – Documentaries

Each course can be studied at 3 different levels of certification so those students that are really interested can go further.  Although they are self study courses, teachers oversee the assessment and there will be a record of achievement for each student available on the Gateway.   Please direct any questions about this course to mxr@mail.island.edu.hk.
