Anti Drug Action Group

The Island School Anti- Drug Action Group (ADA) was newly formed this year as a response to the increase in teenage drug abuse in Hong Kong. Made up of students from Year 12 and 13, we have organized various events this year to spread the anti-drug message across the Island School community, aiming to educate students and prevent the use of drugs.

One event ADA successfully participated in was the Island School Fair. As we tried to be innovative and find new ways of reaching out to students, we organized an anti- drug t-shirt design competition, whereby the winning design would be made and sold at the fair. This was a huge success as we received a large number of entries across all year groups in Island School; in the end, Tami Kwok (13R) won the competition with her ‘It’s In Your Hands’ design. Furthermore, we designed an anti-drug game that educated children and adults of the negative of drugs. At the end of the day, ADA had successfully raised $3796.5 for Society for the Aid and Rehabilitation of Drug Abusers (SARDA) as a demonstration of our support towards those in drug rehabilitation.

As an appreciation of our efforts, SARDA surprisingly invited us to Shek Kwu Chau, a rehabilitation island owned by SARDA. There, we got to see a small part of the island and understand the lives of those in rehabilitation, as well as further increase our knowledge on drugs. The most valuable experience however, was when we got to talk with ex- drug abusers personally, an opportunity few people get. This was an very eye- opening exercise that I’m sure will help ADA plan activities for the future.

Next term, we hope to reach deeper into the Island School community to further raise awareness against drug abuse. Lastly, we would like to thank Kamy for helping, supporting and guiding us all the way.
