Island Time in Year 7

In year 7 there is a new course called Island Time. This course will be transdisciplinary and inquiry based. Skills from all the subject areas will be called upon in the units that will be covered in Island Time. Uniquely these lessons will be extra long at 4 normal periods. This will allow a range of activities during the lesson including visits to places in Hong Kong and visiting speakers without disrupting the rest of the classes. A cross disciplinary team has worked on a generic skills framework, the content and the activities which comprise the course. There are elements of health and social education as well as critical thinking and being discriminating about media in the Island Time course. We are very excited by the introduction of Island Time and believe it has the potential to significantly enhance the education of our students.

The introduction of Island Time will aim to lead to two significant benefits. One is to improve the continuity from Primary School education without jeopardising the benefits of our current programme. The elements of research and inquiry in a multidisciplinary context will be there and the traditional subjects will still maintain their place. The second will be to introduce some of the skills that are needed for the core programmes in the IB and the BTEC courses. These include cross curricular elements and an emphasis on research and inquiry.

During the first year of Island Time, the course will be assessed and a decision will be made as to whether to continue it into years 8 and 9. Until this decision is made years 8 and 9 will use the extra periods by adding some periods to existing courses and having a supervised study period.
